When parents find out that they’re going to have a child, it’s time to start thinking about baby names. Sometimes parents have had names picked out for a long time. Other times, they decide to wait until after the baby is born to choose the child’s name. Whatever name they choose, it’s an important decision and one that will stick with the little one for life unless the child decides to change his or her name.
Jay and Kateri Schwandt have a rather unusual family. It’s unusual because of its size. They have 14 children, and all of them are boys. The oldest child is 25 years old, and the youngest is a newborn baby.
The Schwandts always choose to wait until the baby is born to find out whether they’re having a boy or a girl. Each time, they are surprised to find out that it’s another boy. The odds of having so many boys in a row have to be pretty slim.
When Kateri was pregnant with baby number 14, the family once again waited until the baby was born to find out the gender – another boy. The baby’s older brothers admit that they were “pretty split” about whether or not they were hoping for a little brother or a little sister.
Jay claims that each time one of their children is born, it is just as special as it was the very first time. He explained that it’s “just as exciting the 14th time around.” He added, “Every little kick, every moment felt special.”
The Schwandts didn’t decide on a name for their new bundle of joy until after he was born. Jay explained, “We’ve narrowed it down to just a couple.” He admitted that “After 13 boys, we’ve really had to start getting creative.”
And “get creative” they did. The Schwandts were already in the news because of how many sons they have, but after they decided on a name for baby boy number 14, the headlines changed to talk about the baby’s unusual name.
